How do I show this on the homepage of the website?

I have started a session and used the...

Which is a slimed down version (basically just the topic links)

But nothing works...

Did you read CONTRIB/ADDONS/ADD_ANY_PAGE/INSTALL.XML from the install package?
That file should explain all you need to do.
