PNG Alpha Transparency on thumbnail/medium image generation

Error description and message
When uploading a png image with alpha transparency, the generated thumbnails and medium sized images have a black background on them instead. Now, I'm almost sure this is something I have to edit on my php.ini configuration (or somewhere around here) but am not really sure what exactly is that I am looking for, so any help would be appreciated.

Here's an example in case you got lost somewhere:

The generated image has a black background on it. If you click on the image to load the original file, a shadowbox will appear with a custom background. I'd like that transparency to remain even on the generated images.
